Dutch artist (Ermelo) John Spek is a sculptor with a great preference for stainless steel and bronze. He studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 1978-1980.

After a design phase with pencil sketches and cardboard models, the artist becomes an artisan who will cut, bend, join, weld and grind the material. Besides the shape, the skin of his objects also gives a lot of attention. By mattifying, high-gloss polishing or patinating the faces, he gives the light the opportunity to play a surprising role in what the viewer gets to experience.

As he became more skilled as an artisan, he also gained increasing freedom as a designer. Over the years, his style has moved from a geometric abstract beginning via the circular shape to a largely non-configurable, organic world of forms with curves, undulations, torsions. They are forms that offer associations with sprouting, growing, erecting, dancing, embracing.

His monumental objects, some even higher than 10 meters, can be seen in many places in the Netherlands. They are sometimes stronger, sometimes dynamic or even playful. That depends on the intention that the artist had and which is connected to the place. Sometimes he seeks harmony with that location, sometimes just a contrast.

John Spek’s art is undeniably modern art. His work is not the cry of a constrained soul, nor a protest against all the rottenness in this world. He just wants to offer people a beauty experience.
