Around 1900, an Aart Zwijnenburg wagon-workshop was transformed into a table factory in Lekkerkerk in the Netherlands. The factory designed and produced tables and became the ‘Zwijnenburg Meubel’ factory. In 1942 they moved to Opperduit, where it soon became too small and Zwijnenburg finally settled in Schoonhoven in the Netherlands. Gerard van Geytenbeek and Jack Crebolder designed as one of the early designers complete dining room sets for Zwijnenburg in the 50s and 60s. Tables with matching chairs and then produced in series production. To this end, Zwijnenburg worked with progressive machinery. In the 1970s, a lot was sold to healthcare institutions and the market for Zwijnenberg furniture in Germany and Switzerland grew more and more important. With that German growth the name of the factory had to be changed and so AZS (Aart Zwijnenburg Schoonhoven) was born. A few years after the factory got a new owner in 1987, the company had to close. Gerard van Geytenbeek executed the design vision in the 1960s and 1970s and he always remained connected with craftsmanship and Zwijnenburg. That might be one of the reasons why other designers from that time like Martin Visser or Gerard van der Sluis became more well known compared with Gerard. Perhaps that is why the tripod ‘plataan’ tables from Geytenbeek have become so popular among collectors nowadays. This table is in good condition consistent with age and use.
