Bruno Mathsson Pernilla chairs

“The act of sitting comfortably is a skill, although it shouldn’t be. Instead, the manufacture of seating should be carried out with such skill that the act of sitting in them becomes quite simple.” Bruno Mathsson

Bruno Mathsson is one of Sweden’s most internationally renowned furniture designers. Classics such as the Pernilla, the Jetson and the Karin armchair continue to find new admirers around the world.

Born in 1907 in Värnamo as the son of a master cabinetmaker, Bruno was exposed early on to the possibilities of new wood technologies. A self-taught designer and architect, Mathsson was inspired by the functionalist movement, and, expanding on his family trade, spent much of the 1920s and 1930s studying the functional possibilities of wood.

Mathsson was an advocate of simplicity, beauty and elegance in form, which also applied to his furniture. In his designs he experimented with curves and height, combined with a love of ergonomics and function. Mathsson’s furniture was innovative in technique as well as design, his production methods included the bending of laminated wood.

The classic armchair Pernilla was named after the well-known food and lifestyle journalist, Pernilla Tunberger, who in 1943 interviewed Bruno Mathsson for the daily newspaper, Dagens Nyheter.
