70s Silvio Coppola ‘tavolo quadrato’ dining table for Fratelli Montina
In 1919 three brothers founded the company Montina. They were Giovanni, Pierceleste and Erminio Battista. The initial idea was to sell wooden furniture manufactured in the district but soon Montina shifted from a business company to a manufacturer. The chair factory Montina had its headquarter in Visinale del Judrio (Udine), in an old mill. Later the factory moved to a larger factory.
In the 1950s Palange and Werther Toffolini started designing for the Montina factory. This was very successful and so the working with designers of those days has been extended in the 1960s and 1970s. All great designers of those days like Tito Angnoli, Gio Ponti, Vico Magistretti, Cini Boeri, Giotto Stoppino, Marcello Cuneo, Ilmari Tapiovaare, Eero Aarnio and Silvio Coppola designed furniture for Montina. This gave the factory a real timeless brand issue.
The brand is still existing in Montebelluna (Treviso) in Italy and works with new products, high quality material and still with the best designers of today.
This square dining table has a remarkable wooden lined foot that consists of four beautifully lined wooden elements, carried on 1 rounded wooden bar, that all four fit together with a for that time progressive metal click system. The four parts match invisible to each other carrying the square and also beautiful lined tabletop. Very detailed design of Silvio Coppola who began his career making innovating designs for vehicle bodywork of fiberglass. Later on he started designing wooden furnitures. But in his mainly beautiful straight lined furniture design there is a recognizable technical touch even in the wooden furnitures.
Table in good condition consistent with age and use.
