Arnold Merckx was born in Franeker and grew up there in a family of furniture makers: his father and grandfather were directors of a furniture factory. During school holidays he helped in the factory and thus gained experience in the trade at a young age. In Rotterdam he studied at the Academy of Visual Arts and Technical Sciences, after which he founded his design agency Arnold Merckx Design in Landgraaf. Since the foundation of his own agency in 1978, Merckx has worked for a large number of manufacturers such as Montis, Pastoe, Artifort, Extremis, Lande and Spectrum. At the end of the 1970s, Merckx started an intensive collaboration with Arco in which he played an important role in the development of the company’s identity. Besides the fact that he designed a large part of the collection – a number of products of which still belong to our current collection – Merckx largely determined the identity of Arco at that time. He gave direction to exhibition stands, photography and texts, but also to graphic expressions in collaboration with external graphic designers, such as Geert Setola. Well-known Merckx designs that are still in the Arco collection are the Graphic and the Balance table. He has received several awards and recognitions for his designs.

This balance table is in good condition consistent with age and use.
