Van Zoetendaal was born in The Hague. After secondary school and Kweekschool for teachers, he studied from 1970 to 1975 at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam in the drawing and painting department. In recent years he has studied ceramics. In the year of his graduation in 1975, Van Zoetendaal received a large commission from department store De Bijenkorf in Rotterdam, and established himself as an independent artist and designer in Rotterdam.

In the eighties and nineties he focused on the design of sofas and armchairs in his own hip-hop style. His great examples are the French designer Philippe Starck, the Spanish designer and architect, Oscar Tusquets-Blanca, and the Italian designer Carlo Mollino.

Van Zoetendaal has also been active as a gallery owner since the 1980s. In 1984, together with Jaap Zwier, he opened an exhibition space in Delfshaven De Laughing Cow.

In the 1990s, Van Zoetendaal was active in the Fabricati design store in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Later in the nineties he started his own gallery on the corner of Eendrachtsplein and Rochussenstraat. In the new millennium he moved to Zierikzee, where he has lived and worked ever since and had his own gallery until 2017. Here he works together with his partner Marjon de Man on a series of portraits, among others. from Donald Trump which they exhibit in their gallery.
