Elsa Solheim (1937)is a Norwegian furniture designer and interior architect. She and her husband Nordahl Solheim worked together for almost 40 years. Their furniture originally had roots in Norwegian tradition. Later, they developed the style in a more modern direction Elsa Solheim studied at the department of interior and furniture design at Bergens Kunsthåndverksskole (1957–1960). As teachers, she had, among others, the interior architects Runar Børresen and Sigurd Lie-Olsen. She received a thorough practical and theoretical introduction to furniture design and model building. During her studies, she met Nordahl Solheim, whom she married in 1960. In the same year, Elsa and Nordahl Solheim established their own design practice. In the early 1960s, they found inspiration in Norwegian folk culture with the aim of creating modern furniture with a distinctive Norwegian character. They hunted for source material in libraries and museums. From the mid-1960s, the Solheim couple mainly designed furniture adapted to industrialized furniture production. An important collaboration partner was O.P. Rykken & Co. (later Rybo). The solution for the Flexi furniture series, which consisted of a table, sewing table, flower box and stool, all in teak, was well thought out and well designed. Chairs with suspension Typical for Solheim are chairs with sprung bases. It was something they started working on from the end of the 1960s. The prototype for the recliner Kengu was shown in Copenhagen 1967. Later the pirate chair where part of the slight moving seating they designed and where iconic chairs that are still rare and attractive for design enthousiasts. This set of two chairs are in good condition consistent with age and use.
