Marcel Warmenhoven (1954) has limited himself in his work to a single technique of expression, the images made from waste wood, preferably from discarded furniture, have a new place in the total. His first wooden sculptures originated around 1980 in Maastricht at the Jan van Eyck Academy. They testify to skillful speed and inventiveness. Chair legs that act like the legs of an animal. The tail, a paintbrush. Light-footedness predominates. In his later work he reveals himself more and more as a skilled craftsman. Shapes become more to the appearance but not he the given material to his will. At the end of the eighties and in the early years, Warmenhoven made a series of very large sculptures. A tiger of 4.5 meters long, for example. He already masters his material so viros that the curved shapes of wooden furniture parts and utensils enable him to “draw” with it. Outwardly, the images are reminiscent of ligaments or anatomical muscle models used in medical science education. In smooth lines, the artist builds large human and animal figures. The shape of the material is not violated. consistently the objects – clothes hangers, chair legs, ladles – recognizable. However, the material is becoming a new discipline and it even seems obvious as the more traditional sculpting materials or wax. Since 2000, the artist has been working on the sculpture MAN AND HORSE for almost four years. The horse is three meters long and over three meters high. Marcel never limits his view by the material, no matter how difficult it is. This is how this work, Portrait III as a metal sculpture, was created. Not limitation in materials but re-use of metal, copper etc to create. Any design furniture collector could actually have a work by Marcel in the collection because his link from his work towards furniture is very large.
