German designer Herbert Ohl was born in 1926, studied painting and graphic design at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe, and went on to study architecture under Egon Eiermann at the Technische Hochschule there. Until the end of the 1960s, he worked as a free-lance architect and designer in Ulm where he was Rector of the Academy of Design (HfG) from 1964 to 1968. His projects as an industrial designer were accompanied by work on the Council of Experts.

Ohl won many awards such as the New York Low-Cost-Housing-Prize in 1969 and the “Gute-Form” Prize in 1983. In 1984 he was appointed Professor at the Fachhochschule in Pforzheim. His passion for “sitting on netting” resulted in the Wilkhahn O-Line chair (1982) and Nuvola (1998). The O-line was produced by Wilkhahn from 1982 untill 1995.
