Rare postmodern dining chair in Memphis style designed by the famous Dutch designer duo Pierre Mazairac and Karel Boonzaadjer for Castelijn. The harmonica chairs, as they are called, are comfortable and very linear. Chairs are in good condition consistent with age and use.

Pierre Mazairac has become internationally known for the many designs he developed in the period 1972 to 1980 at the furniture factory UMS-Pastoe and from 1980 to 1992 at his own studio Mazairac and Boonzaadjer & partners.

After his education at the Artibus academy in Utrecht, Pierre Mazairac worked for various employers as a stylist and interior architect. In 1972 he joined the furniture factory UMS-Pastoe in Utrecht. In 1980, together with Karel Boonzaadjer, he started his own design agency in Zeist, Mazairac and Boonzaadjer & partners. Later the design agency was called Mazairac Boonzaadjer en Van Tellingen & partners. It specialized in industrial design with a focus on furniture design and had a separate section that focused on architecture. Clients were important national and international manufacturers, including Pastoe, Hennie de Jong, Leolux, Metaform, Castelijn, Arco, Agape, IKEA. The partnership ended in 1995.

Pierre Mazairac has been living in Switzerland since 1996. Nowadays he mainly focuses on the so-called ‘leisure design’ (holiday parks, hotels and restaurants).

Mazairac and Boonzaadjer have been very strong in the field of dining room chairs and tables. The ‘Cirkel’ chairs, produced by Metaform, and the ‘SM01’, designed for Hennie de Jong, are products that were sold by the thousands a year. They also designed for Castelijn, Arco and others. This set of 4 dining harmonica come from the Castelijn designs Mazairac and Boonzaaijer worked for in the 1980s-1990s. So they are one of the latest designs before Mazairac stopped and moved to Switzerland.
