Arne Jacobsen butterfly chair for Fritz Hanzen set/4
Arne Jacobsen (1902 – 1971) was a Danish architect and designer. After studying architecture in Copenhagen in 1927, Jacobsen joined the architectural firm of Paul Holsoe. In 1930 he founded his own office. Jacobsen was a professor of architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Art. His most famous designs are St. Catherine’s College in Oxford and the SAS Hotel in Copenhagen. He also designed taps, cutlery and beautiful furniture, of which the dining room chairs the ant, the swan and the armchair the egg are the most well-known examples. This Egg chair became world famous and was characterized by an elegant simple style. Backrest and seat were bent from one piece of plywood. Jacobsen’s design style can be described as functionalist, because for him form is always determined by function. Arne Jacobsen has been influenced by Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Bauhaus. Jacobsen in turn has influenced many other designers.
Also very wellknown are the butterfly chairs Jacobsen designed in 1955. They have been delivered as tripod and four leg chairs. The four leg chairs are more stable of course and this set has a beautiful patina on the wood and is in good condition consistent with age and use.
